Jupally submitted his resignation yesterday and Governor accepted it after meeting Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy this morning. Political implications of Congress-PRP merger

PRP's Chiranjeevi merged with Congress

PRP President Chiranjeevi officially announced the merger of Praja Rajyam Party with Congress. This merger has the potential to change political equations in Andhra Pradesh significantly. After 33 years (Reddy Congress), Reddys are once again at cross-roads.   Political implications of PRP-Congress merger:  1. Congress party now has 174 MLAs in AP Assembly – 27 more than required to win the confidence motion. MIM has 7 MLAs who also vote for Congress if required.  Our comment: No threat to Kiran Kumar Reddy Government. No mid-term polls in Andhra Pradesh. Jagan should prepare to play long innings in Andhra politics.  2. Congress High command will not hesitate to take action against any Congress MLA if they cross "Laxmana rekha." Jagan group MLAs may hesitate to participate in Jagan party's programmes.  3. Congress Party now has a crowd-puller in their kitty. Chairanjeevi's charishma + Congress tactics may help to control the erosion of Congress party base in the Coastal districts.   4. Statistics: Don't over-estimate the benefits of merger.  In 2009 elections, Congress party got 37% votes while PRP got 17% votes.  According to the surveys conducted in October, 2010, Congress party got 34% votes while PRP got just 12% votes.  According to political analysts, Congress party vote bank is reduced to 22-25% due to Jagan factor. Due to loss of credibility, PRP vote bank may have reduced to just 5-6%.   So, Congress now has around 30% vote share in Andhra Pradesh while TDP may have 25-28% vote share due to loss in Telangana region. TRS may get 10% vote share due to sentiment in that region.  But in … [Read more...]
