Greater Visakha corporation (GVMC)

 

 

 

Visakhapatnam (Waltair) became municipality in 1858 and was upgraded to Municipal corporation in 1901. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) was constituted in November, 2005 by merging Gajuwaka municipality and 32 gram panchayats with Vizag corporation. Vizianagaram rajas played vital role in the early development of the city.

 

 

Vizag population was just 43,000 in 1911 and crossed 13 lakh in 2000. Kakinada and Rajahmundry were more populous towns than Vizag in 1911. Visakhapatnam is one of the fastest growing cities in India.

ResultCongress party corporator, Pulusu Janardhana Rao is elected as corporation Mayor while Congress corporator, K. Dorababu is elected deputy Mayor.

 

 

In these corporation polls, TDP and CPI contested in an alliance while TDP and CPM also contested in alliance. But, Congress party won the Mayor post with the help of independents. Telugu Desam contested in 57 wards while Congress contested in 67 wards.

 

 

CPM is the worst performer. It contested in 15 wards (TDP alliance) but won in just two wards and helped Congress party to improve its tally.
