Guntur is one of the most politically active cities in Andhra pradesh even when there are no elections. Muslims are dominant in Guntur East while Kapu and Kammas are dominant in Guntur West. Even though Muslims are dominant group (population wise) in the city, Kamma and Kapu leaders are enjoying Mayor post due to indirect elections.
Original name of “City of Spices” is Gardhapuri. Guntur municipality upgraded to municipal corporation in August, 1995.
