Kakinada Corporation

Kakinada is a port city in East Godavari district and is considered as “Pennsioner’s paradise” due to its rural village atmosphere. Kakinada derived its name from “Kakavandivada” and “Coconada”. Kakinada is now undergoing rapid change industrially after oil discovery in Krishna-Godavari basin by Reliance, Cairn and ONGC etc. Kakinada is also called as “Fertiliser city” due to the presence of Nagarajuna and Godavari fertiliser factories.

Kakinada became municipality in 1866 and was upgraded to Municipal corporation in 2005. Kakinada is a tier-2 city with a population of around 6 lakh but it was just 54,000 in 1911. Kakinada city is traditionally a Congress stronghold but Praja Rajyam is now looking strong due to caste equations.

Politically dominant Castes: Kapu, Setti Balija & Fishermen. Vysyas are gradually losing their political clout in the city.

Political developments:

1. Prajarajyam party won Kakinada rural assembly and came second in Kakinada Urban assembly segment. Telugu Desam party relegated to third place in Kakinada city. But, PRP lost some sheen in recent days.

2. Kakinada MLA Dwarampudi Chandrasekhar Reddy is a staunch follower of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. So, If Y.S. Jagan forms a new political party, political equations will change drastically.
