Chirala municipality

Chirala town is the Taluka headquarter (revenue division) in Prakasam district and is famous for textile business. Chirala was founded in 1604 and played crucial struggle in Indian freedom movement. Weavers constitute 25% of the population and dominate the town politics. Chief minister Konijeti Rosaiah represented Chirala in the Assembly.

Chirala is traditionally a Congress party bastion and Praja Rajyam party failed to show significant impact in Chirala. Congress party has strong vote bank in Vysyas, Scheduled castes while weaver votes split between TDP and Congress.
