Ongole town became grade-3 municipality in 1876 and is expected to upgrade to municipal corporation by 2013. Congress party ruled the municipality in the last 30 years (except 2000-05)
Ongole town became the district headquarter of newly constituted Ongole district in 1970 (its name was changed to Prakasam district in 1972). Its population was just 13,000 in 1910 but it is now around 2.3 lakh due to migration of people from surrounding villages.
Telugu Desam party is struggling in Ongole despite having strong vote bank in Kamma and Yadava communities. Praja Rajyam party failed to show significant impact in the 2009 elections despite favourable caste equations.
