Congress party

Andhra Pradesh is traditionally a Congress Party bastion until the formation of Telugu Desam Party by N.T. Rama Rao in 1982. Congress party never lost power in AP until 1983 elections. Congress gradually lost base in AP by changing Chief Ministers frequently. NTR decimated Congress Party by forming Kamma and BC alliance in 1983 but Congress retained power in 1989 by forming Reddy + Kapu + SC combination.

Congress Party has strong base in Reddy, Brahmin and Mala communities and also has significant strength in Kapu and Madiga communities. It has weak base in Kamma community and also in backward castes (BC).

After the emergence of TDP in 1982, Congress Party failed to win even once in 75 Assembly constituencies till 2004 elections. But, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy helped party to spread across all regions especially in North Andhra and Telangana regions. YSR succeeded in controlling “groupism” in the Congress Party and also improved party image among the poor people and farmers who traditionally vote for TDP and Communist parties.

After the demise of YSR, Party once again went back to its old ways and leaders who do not have mass base emerged strongly. Congress party’s future in Andhra Pradesh will partially depend on Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s future steps.

N. Kiran Kumar Reddy is also a very good leader and has the capacity to strengthen the Party in Andhra Pradesh.
