AP Municipal elections in 2-3 months

  Minister Maheedhar Reddy today stated that Andhra Municipal elections will held in 2-3 months on party lines. 50% of seats (both Chairmen & ward members) will be reserved for women. BC/SC/ST Reservations will be allotted basing on 2001 census. But, elections will be held only after upgradation of some municipalities and Nagar panchayats. Municipal towns like Ongole, Khammam and Chittoor will be upgraded to Corporations. 27 Nagar Panchayats will be upgraded to Municipalities.    But, State Election Commission ordered local administration to display electoral rolls by May 16 and EC may go ahead and announce schedule for Municipal Polls if Government does not cooperate. So, Municipal Polls will be held in 2-3 months. YSR Congress, Congress and Telugu Desam will fight hard in Coastal Andhra & Rayalaseema while TRS is expected to sweep in Telangana towns.  10 Corporations and 95 Municipalities are under special officers rule for last 7 months. Government is trying to post-pone polls due to unfavourable political atmosphere and Telangana movement. Due to reservations, few OC men (just 25% seats) will get chance to contest in 2011 Municipal polls.  50% seats will go to women candidates. BCs will get 33.3% seats, SCs get 16.6% while STs will get 6.6% seats. Municipal elections were held last time in 2005 on September 24. Municipal Chairpersons and Maylors will be elected by Corporators and ward members in an indirect poll. Election Commission may not implement e-voting in these elections.  ZPTC and MPTC elections may also be held in July/August according to the schedule.
